Fresh from double Olympic success at the Paris 2024 games, Team GB cyclist Jack Carlin was on hand to make the Scottish Gas Men’s Scottish Cup First Round draw at Hampden this weekend.

The Scottish track star and dedicated Scotland fan joined host, Gordon Duncan, to draw the 30 Round One ties that will take place across the weekend of September 28.

The 26 teams that progressed through the Preliminary Rounds are joined by sides from the Highland and Lowland Leagues to form the 60 teams in the Round One draw.

Sauchie Juniors, who are top of the East of Scotland Premier League and progressed from the Preliminary Rounds, will travel to Strathspey Thistle.

Whilst Formartine United who got to the Third Round last season will host Whitehill Welfare.

And, last season’s Lowland League winners, East Kilbride take on Gretna 2008

After conducting the draw Olympian Jack Carlin reflected on what makes the Scottish Cup so special: “It’s a right of passage as a Scottish football fan that you follow the Scottish Cup. It’s a competition that I’ve followed since I was little so to be here and to be part of it is fantastic.

“It’s also a competition that gives teams all around the country the opportunity to show themselves and what they’re capable of. It’s really inspiring to see teams from the lower leagues compete and show what they’re made of.”

Following Olympic success in Paris, Jack reflected on the last few months.

He said: “It’s been a whirlwind to be honest and a really good experience. Last time in Tokyo we had no fans or family because of Covid, but this time it felt like I had a full army behind me which really spurred me on.

“It was an exciting week of racing at the track. The two medals that I won were hard-fought and I’m really proud that I got them.”

“When I got my first double in 2020, I was very much the kid in the group,” Jack added. “This time, I was the only one that had been to an Olympics before so there was a shift there.

“There were also expectations there that I put on myself but also expectations from the team and the fans. It was definitely different this time round but it’s a privilege to be in that position.”

The double-medal winner is taking a well-earned break before preparations start for the next competitive calendar: “There’s plenty to come before Los Angeles in 2028 and right now my priority is to decompress and recover.

“Hopefully I’ll be back in four years with the same determination and ambition to go out there and win some more medals.

“But first I’m going to focus on recovery and spending some time at home with my family. I’m also really looking forward to coming back to Hampden on Thursday night to get right behind the Scotland team against Poland.”
