During his first season in professional football, he established himself as a first team regular and started the League Cup final as St Mirren beat Hearts to lift the trophy for the first time in their history.
After signing for Hibernian in 2015, the midfielder was part of the squad that won the Scottish Cup for the first time in 114 years and was named Scottish Championship Player of the Season as the club were promoted back to the top flight the following season in 2017.
McGinn signed for Aston Villa in 2018, scoring his first goal for the club in September of that year, a goal which was later voted the EFL Championship goal of the season.
In the final game of his debut season with the club, he scored the winning goal in the Championship play-off final as Villa were promoted back to the Premier League.
At the start of the 2023/24 season the midfielder was named as the new club captain, captaining the side to UEFA Champions League qualification after a top four finish in the league.
At international level, McGinn made his Scotland debut in a 2016 friendly against Denmark, being named player of the match during a 1-0 victory.
He scored his first international goal during a EURO 2020 qualification match against Russia in September 2019 before scoring his first career hat-trick against San Marino a few months later.
The midfielder represented his country at both EURO 2020 and EURO 2024, playing in all his country’s group stage matches at these tournaments.
A vital member of the squad and a fan favourite, McGinn was named vice-captain of Scotland and he captained the side on his 50th cap against Republic of Ireland in 2022, deputising for the injured Andy Robertson.
In November 2024, McGinn scored his 20th Scotland goal, putting him fifth on the all-time goals list, ahead of Ally McCoist.
McGinn was an ever-present during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, playing every minute as Scotland qualified for the tournament for the first time since 1998.
