Biography
James progressed through the Middlesbrough youth ranks and made his senior debut in January 2004.
The midfielder scored his first goal for the club in a UEFA Cup tie later that year and went on to play in the 2006 final against Sevilla. He joined West Bromwich Albion in 2007, and established himself as one of the club's most consistent performers.
Darlington-born James qualifies for Scotland through his grandfather, and made his debut in a friendly against the Czech Republic in May 2008. He scored his first goal for the national side in the 3-1 Carling Nations Cup win over Wales in May 2011.
He established himself in the Scotland midfield during the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying campaign, playing in every match.
James captained the national team for the first time in June 2013, leading Scotland to a 1-0 FIFA World Cup qualifying win over Croatia in Zagreb.
