Scotland Head Coach Melissa Andreatta has named midfielder Caroline Weir as the new Scotland Women’s National Team captain, with Erin Cuthbert appointed vice-captain.

Weir, one of Scotland’s most accomplished and experienced players, assumes the captaincy with 115 international appearances and 21 goals to her name. The Real Madrid midfielder has been a vital player for Scotland for more than a decade after making her debut in dark blue in June 2013.

Weir takes over as captain following the retirement of Rachel Corsie last summer who led SWNT since September 2017.

Scotland’s first Ballo d’Or Feminin nominee will join the group for the first time as captain later this month as they prepare for the start of the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification campaign which kicks off with a double-header against Luxemburg.

Speaking after her appointment, Weir said: “I’m honoured and delighted to be named captain of the Scotland Women’s National Team. It’s such a proud moment for me and my family.

“I’m very grateful to Melissa and the staff for the trust they have put in me, as well as every coach and player that has helped me get to this point.”

She added: “Every opportunity to represent Scotland is a privilege and to do so as captain is even more special and a responsibility that I’m excited to embrace.

“I’m fortunate to be surrounded by so many natural leaders within this squad and to have learned from those who have gone before me.

“It’s an exciting time for us as we start the qualification journey to Brazil 2027, with a passionate, hard-working and talented group of players.”

Erin Cuthbert has been named vice-captain, further strengthening the team’s leadership group. With 82 caps, the Chelsea midfielder continues to be a key figure for both club and country.

Cuthbert said: “It’s an incredible privilege and honour to take on this role for the Scotland Women’s National Team.

“As a little girl, I never imagined that I would represent Scotland so many times never mind take on a leadership role of this magnitude.

“I’m looking forward to working with Caroline and doing everything we can to make sure this team succeeds.

“We’re building something special and I’d love nothing more than to get us back to major tournaments - where I believe we belong.”

Scotland Head Coach Melissa Andreatta praised both players for their leadership qualities and influence within the squad, saying: “Caroline and Erin consistently set the benchmark in terms of professionalism, attitude, and commitment.

“They lead by example every day, and their experience and drive will be invaluable as we continue to build and move forward as a team.”
