Rangers and Celtic met at Hampden Park for the Youth Cup Final. Rangers, who were current holders of the Youth Cup having beaten Heart of Midlothian in last year’s final, beat Hamilton 3-0 in their Semi-final at Ibrox while Celtic ran out 5-0 victors against St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park to reach the final.

Celtic were crowned 2022/23 Youth Cup winners following an eleven- goal thriller in what was an entertaining and highly contested game to watch.

As It Happened

It was Rangers that opened the scoring in the 20th minute. Jack Roberts received the ball in his path, taking a touch just inside the box before releasing an effort past the Celtic keeper, into the back of the net.

Celtic responded quickly and equalised 5 minutes later thanks to great play between Daniel Kelly and Mitchel Frame which lead to Frame making his way into the box before firing the ball into the net from a tight angle.

Celtic took the lead of the game 2 minutes after their equaliser when Magnus MacKenzie played the ball into the path of Corey Thomson who had made his way into the box. Thomson cut the ball back to get away from Kristian Webster and slotted a great finish into the back of the net.

Rangers then equalised in the 33rd minute when Zakariya Lovelace slipped the ball into the path of Jack Roberts who was running into the box and the strikers squeezed the ball in at the back post for his second of the game.

The teams didn’t stay of level terms for long as Celtic scored again in the 35th minute. Daniel Cummings effort was saved by Jacob Pazikas however Daniel Kelley was there at the back post area to pick up the rebound and fire it into the top of the net.

A minute before half time and Rangers equalised when Archie Stevens drove into the box and slotted his effort into the far corner to make the score 3-3 going into half time.

It didn’t take long after half time for the scoring to start again. Rangers were awarded a penalty 5 minutes into the second half when Zakariya Lovelace was brought down in the box by Josh Dede. Findlay Curtis stepped up to take it and scored into the bottom left corner.

Celtic equalised in the 60th minute to make the score 4-4 when Mitchel Frame crossed the ball into the 6 yard box and it was turned into his own net by Leyton Grant.

In the 84th minute, Zakariya Lovelace was shown his second yellow card of the game resulting in Rangers being reduced to 10 men.

After a fantastic 90 minutes of entertaining football which ended 4-4, another 30 minutes was to be played to decided who would be lifting the Youth Cup.

Celtic opened the scoring in extra time when Jude Bonnar played a great ball into the box which met Daniel Cummings and the strikers fired a first time finish into the net from a few yards out.

Celtic scored again in the second half of extra time thanks to 2 of the substitutes. Benny-Jackson Luyeye played a great ball across the box which was back heeled into the net from around 6 yards out by Lewis Dobbie.

Rangers grabbed a goal back a minute into stoppage time when Tyler Pasnik got himself on the end of a Zak McKay cross to fire a first time finish past Marcus Gill.
