Free sanitary products to tackle period dignity for fans will be available in Hampden Park as a result of a trial between the Scottish FA and social enterprise company Hey Girls.

The agreement will see the products become available in 73 female and accessible bathrooms in the National Stadium, available for fans and employees alike.

Hey Girls campaign to tackle period dignity strives to ensure that women have period protection in every working environment. That paints half of the picture, with the other campaign aimed at tackling period poverty, with one in 10 girls in the UK unable to afford sanitary products.

With Hey Girls ‘Buy One Give One’ model, the Scottish FA’s investment to work with the social enterprise group will have an impact both inside and outside of Hampden. For every box purchased for use in the National Stadium a donation will be matched, with free products going to those in need in the community.

The trial agreement will begin as early as Sunday’s match against San Marino, and will span across five matches at Hampden, including two League Cup semi-final fixtures.

Scottish FA Youth Ambassador Anna O’Donnell, who was at the heart of bringing the initiative in to Hampden, said: “The provision of free sanitary products is rightfully becoming more common. Programmes such as ours allow us to help de-stigmatise periods and support female fans and staff.

“The ‘Buy One Give One’ approach of Hey Girls will also allow us to support the most vulnerable women and girls in society who may struggle with period poverty.

“I am exceptionally proud to have driven this project forward with the immense backing of all connected staff at the Scottish FA. Their support has led to us being the first national football association to adopt such a scheme, something we are all rightly proud of.”

A Hey Girls spokesperson said: “Hey Girls are on a mission to eradicate period poverty in the UK. Period dignity comes hand in hand with our work, because no-one deserves to be caught short or miss out just because of their period.

“Working with the Scottish FA brings us one step closer to creating equality for people with periods at work and play. By this national association choosing to provide period dignity to their fans, we get to match and donate the same product to women and girls in need - the impact this can have on individual livelihoods, wellbeing, and confidence is just immense.”
