Melissa Andreatta made two changes to the side that defeated the visitors 5-0 on Tuesday night. Goalscorer from the reverse fixture, Kathleen McGovern, came in to replace Freya Gregory and Charlotte Newsham made her first start for her country as Emma Lawton dropped to the bench.

As It Happened

Scotland started fast, and it didn’t take long for them to take the lead. Straight from kick off the home side overloaded the Luxembourg half and the ball landed to Caroline Weir who expertly turned, opened the visitors’ defence and played Kathleen McGovern through on goal. The striker made no mistake and slotted home after just 43 seconds on the clock.

Scotland continued to dominate and if it wasn’t for Amai Cherkane, Charlotte Newsham would have had her first national team goal. Erin Cuthbert made a driving run down the left-hand side and with Lucie Schlime in no mans land she chipped a ball to the back post which was met by Newsham, but the defender did well to clear it off the line at point blank range and the ball went out for a Scotland corner. This is where Jenna Clark doubled the lead after ten minutes as she bundled home the in-swinging Weir corner. A mix up in the box from the visitors meant the centre back’s effort found the back of the net.

The hosts piled on the pressure but efforts from McGovern and Maria McAneny followed but were of no trouble to Schlime who collected comfortably. Just before the half an hour mark, Cuthbert pounced on a loose pass form Kimberley Dos Santos. The midfielder’s cross found Weir, but her effort was saved superbly by Schlime.

A third goal for Scotland came 30 seconds later. Some neat interchange from Newsham, McAneny and Weir resulted in the ball landing at the feet of McGovern who fired past the Luxembourg shot stopper to give the Scotland number 9 her second of the match.

Kirsty Hanson could have made it four just before the break after she got on the end of a deflected Miri Taylor effort but her shot whistled past the post.

Half Time: Scotland 3-0 Luxembourg

The second half began as a scrappy affair, neither side gaining control of the ball. An early chance did come for McGovern who should have had her hat trick but her effort from just inside the box sailed over the bar after some good work from Newsham down the right-hand side.

Scotland added to their tally as Jenna Clark got her second of the game. Anther corner from captain Caroline Weir met the head of Clark who directed the ball goalwards and it deflected past Schlime giving the hosts their fourth.

A first chance for the visitors came after 63 minutes. Captain Laura Miller won the ball high in the Scotland half and played the ball through to substitute Charlie Jorge, but her shot went wide of Sandy MacIver’s goal.

With just under 15 minutes left, Leah Eddie made an instant impact moments after coming on. Her first time cross caught Schlime off guard and was swept home by Lauren Davidson to make it 5-0.

Scotland got their sixth through Emma Lawton’s audacious flick in the 88th minute. The full back did well, winning a corner after using her pace to breeze past Cherkane and her cross was deflected behind. Weir again was the provider, and Lawton backheeled the ball off the defending Luxembourg players and into the roof of the net.

As the game drew to a close, McAneny sent a header wide after a bursting run from Freya Gregory down the left flank. However, the midfielder made amends moments later, producing a fine finish as she curled the ball inside the far post after a cut back from Lawton.
