Team News

Following another victory in their international friendly against Belgium in February, Scotland Head Coach Gary Doctor kept a largely unchanged team, with Isla Taylor coming in to replace Eloise Summers-Mee, followed by the late addition of Jess Ramsay, called up to replace Mia McArthur.

As It Happened

Scotland’s Laura Berry wasted no time from the start of the game with a powerful shot that forced Austria’s goalkeeper Vivien Grabenhofer into a desperate save that left the Austrian keeper feeling the sting.

Berry soon followed up with another shot that emphasised to Grabenhofer just how difficult a match this was going to be for the Austrians against a determined Scotland.

Scotland’s Braelynn Galt was soon called into action once Austria started settling down from the constant Scottish attack; Denise Lueger sent the ball straight at the keeper.

But it was Austria that broke the deadlock.

Lueger broke into the box, drawing several defenders in with her, before playing a pass out to Greta Spinn, who sent the ball beyond Galt to take the lead.

The pressure would pile on the Scottish defence as Galt saw the referee award a free kick against her just on the edge of the penalty area, but Anna Osl’s effort struck the wall and came to nothing.

Jess Husband soon had Scotland taking the fight back to Austria, with an impressive break from deep within Scotland’s half, storming past several opposition players, before neatly passing the ball out wide to Sophie Townsley, whose own floated cross nearly brought Scotland back level, but they were unable to convert the chance.

Just before the end of the half, Laura Berry broke up the wing, past the defence, but was brought down in the box, with the referee awarding a penalty that Berry coolly converted, sending the ball just past Grabenhofer and in off the post to bring the score level.

The second half brought a fiery start as both teams looked to add to the score, with Scotland hoping to continue their unbeaten streak; Austria had other ideas, putting Galt under pressure, but the Scottish keeper kept her nerve and made the saves when needed.

No sooner was she off the bench than Sienna McGoldrick was forcing Austria’s Grabenhofer into making another frantic save when a failed clearance saw the midfielder put a head straight at goal.

Jess Husband impressed with another chance as a long-range effort skimmed wide of the post after she broke through the Austrian defence from the midfield.

Husband then looked to recreate her phenomenal free kick against Belgium in February, but her curling ball narrowly missed the top corner she had aimed for, leaving the crossbar rattling from the impact.

A calamitous foul by Lilah Havel, who dragged Sienna McGoldrick to the ground during a Scotland corner, gave the referee no option but to award a penalty to Scotland in the dying minutes of the game.

Substitute Sophia Martin stepped up to face the Austrian keeper, and the young Scot put her laces through the ball in a confident strike that Grabenhofer had no hope of saving, leaving the roof of the net rippling and Scotland with the winning goal to seal the three points on the day.

Scotland move into second place in Group A4, behind Norway, who only sit above the Scots on goal difference following their win over North Macedonia. Scotland will face North Macedonia next on Monday.
