John William Paterson was born in Dundee on 14 December 1896. Date of death not known.
His early football career, which started promisingly with local junior team Dundee North End, was interrupted by the First World War in which he served with the Black Watch (and was wounded five times). He moved to Dundee FC and earned a transfer to Leicester City in December 1919. His speed and goalscoring prowess brought him a single international cap in the 5-4 defeat to England at Hillsborough in 1920.
