Biography
Robert Francis Dudgeon Ancell was born in Dumfries on 16 June 1911. He died in 1987.
An excellent left back, he started locally with Mid Annandale before joining St Mirren in 1930, reaching the Scottish Cup final of 1934. Newcastle United secured his services in August 1936 but the intervention of the war curtailed his playing career after a hundred matches for the Tyneside team. He guested for numerous clubs before heading north to join Dundee in 1944 and also played for Aberdeen in 1948-49.
