Biography
Thomas Henderson Docherty was born in Glasgow on 24 April, 1928. A charismatic figure as a player, manager and commentator, Tommy Docherty began in the east end of Glasgow with local junior team Shettleston until he was called up for National service in the Highland Light Infantry. While completing his National Service, Docherty represented the British Army at football. On demobilisation, he signed for Celtic in July 1948. His stay at Celtic Park was brief, and he moved south to Preston North End in November 1949. Playing at right half, he was an essential component in the club team for almost a decade, winning the Second Division championship in 1951 and also playing in the 1954 FA Cup Final.
