John McDougall was born in Dunbartonshire around 1853. He died on 16 May 1925 aged 72.
An early star of Scottish football, McDougall was a fine goalscorer and scored a hat trick in Scotlands record 7-2 victory over England in 1878. He was also instrumental in Vale of Levens three consecutive Scottish Cup victories in 1877, 1878 (scoring the only goal of the game) and 1879. Vale seem to have been his only club.
