Matt came through the ranks at Rochdale, and went on to make almost 200 appearances for his home-town club. He signed for then-Championship side Norwich City in 2007, but was unable to break into the first team, and moved to Blackpool in 2008. His first start came three months later in a 2-1 friendly win over Luxembourg at the Stade Josy Barthel. Matt won his first competitive cap when he replaced the injured David Marshall at half-time, and went on to make a string of crucial saves, in the 2-1 FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifying win over Macedonia in Skopje.
