Biography
As a player, Scot built a reputation as a reliable midfield presence at Nottingham Forest where he made sover 250 appearances before joining Everton in 1999. He racked up a century of appearances for the Toffees under the guidance of fellow Scots Walter Smith and David Moyes. Scot then saw out his playing career with spells at Leicester City and New Zealand Knights.
During his international playing career, Scot made 26 appearances for Scotland and scored one goal. He was part of the squad for both the 1996 European Championships and 1998 World Cup but was consigned to the subs bench at both tournaments. He made his final appearance for Scotland in April 2003.
Scot got his first taste of coaching during a brief spell as player/coach at Oxford United under manager Jim Smith in 2006. He then moved on to a similar role at New Zealand Knights in Auckland for the 2006-07 season. After that he spent some time away from the limelight, developing his coaching skills. During time spent living in Barcelona, Scot regularly watched coaching sessions of the Barcelona youth teams and analysed their approach to youth coaching.
When he returned to Glasgow, he aimed to undertake similar research and compare the approaches used in Scottish youth football. During an early scouting mission at a St Mirren youth game, he met the previous under-21s coach Billy Stark who invited him along on a trip with the under-17s squad. Soon after that trip, Scot became part of the national coaching setup.
Scot was officially appointed head coach of the Scotland Under-17 squad in March 2014 and guided them to the semi-finals of the 2014 UEFA European Under-17 Championship. In September 2016 he took up his current role as head coach for the under-21s.
