Liechtenstein v Scotland
International Friendly
Monday, 9 June 2025 (5pm UK time)
Rheinpark Stadion, Vaduz

Steve Clarke's Scotland end their June camp with a friendly match against Liechtenstein in Vaduz, in what is a final preparation match ahead of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers which take place in the Autumn.

Steve Clarke and his side are in Group C, alongside Denmark, Greece and Belarus, and kick off away to Denmark in September.

It's 14 years since Scotland's last visit to the Rheinpark Stadion, with Craig Mackail-Smith scoring the winner last time in a 1-0 victory under Craig Levein in a 2011 European Championship qualifier.

Scotland will be aiming to bounce back after a disappointing 3-1 friendly defeat at home to Iceland on Friday evening at Hampden Park.

Team news

There is one new face in camp, with goalkeeper Ross Doohan joining up ahead of the journey to Liechtenstein, while fellow stopper Callan McKenna - who has been with the group all week as a training goalkeeper - is officially called up to the squad as well, in place of Angus Gunn and Robby McCrorie who were both injured on Friday night against Iceland.

Experienced duo Scott McTominay and Kieran Tierney will also miss tomorrow's match after picking up knocks.

After Cieran Slicker and Lennon Miller made their Scotland debuts at home to Iceland on Friday, Josh Doig, Connor Barron and Andy Irving will all be hoping to make their international bows in Vaduz.

The introduction of McKenna also means there are now five Scottish FA JD Performance School graduates in the squad, in McKenna, Barron, Max Johnston, Billy Gilmour and Nathan Patterson, while Irving also spent time on the programme.

Pre-match thoughts

Scotland Head Coach Steve Clarke: "The day after the game we tend to be a bit lowkey but today we had the chance to get back on the training pitch to prepare for this game coming up.

"It was obviously a disappointing performance on Friday so we touched on that a little bit and we will look to do better in the game tomorrow.

"We can maybe defend set plays a bit better, I think if you look at the goals we conceded. We've been fantastic with set plays but they didn't do what we've been doing over the past four or five years.

"Scott (McTominay) and Kieran (Tierney) both came into camp carrying minor issues. I think if we had longer between the matches they'd have had a chance but it's the end of season so the most important thing is that they have a good rest over the summer and come back flying in the Autumn.

"Ross (Doohan) had been on holiday with his family. It says everything in terms of his commitment but joining up with the national squad is not something you turn down, not in my book anyway.

"He's got good experience - he's got over 150 games and one of the things we were trying to find was someone who had trained fairly late into the season and obviously Ross had been involved in the cup final with Aberdeen.

"The team will be freshened up a little bit, probably a bit more than I normally do.

"Everything game is difficult for its own reason. We go into every game looking to win and obviously if we play well then that would be nice as well."

Scotland's Billy Gilmour: "We're looking for a positive reaction. Obviously we didn't do ourselves justice at home to Iceland. It was disappointing for the fans so tomorrow night, we're looking to come here and win the game.

"I finished on a high at club level this season and wanted to take that into these games here. The only right thing is now to win tomorrow.

"To say I'm a league winner in Italy is an amazing feeling and the hard work you put in over the course of the season is for those moments. Hopefully I can add more to it but I just try to take it game by game and take what I'm doing at club level into international level.

"It's been a long season for the boys but when we get picked for the national team we want to come and win games and get back to the way we were in previous camps. We know tomorrow's going to be a tough game and we need to go out there, start fast and get the win.

"Iceland came with their game plan. They were tough, they were better than us on the night and we need to face the fact that we weren't good enough. We need to do the basics right and get the win which is ultimately the priority.

"We're not happy with how we performed the other night and we've got a chance to put that right. For us, we've got to be ready, be at it and we've worked on how we can win the game and that's the plan.

"We're going in to tomorrow night thinking we'll have a lot of the ball and we need to be patient, try to break them down, and work the ball well and hopefully if we get the first goal and a second, it can bring everyone's confidence up."
