UEFA Under-21 Championship Qualifying
Scotland v Belgium
Friday, 11 October 2024
Tynecastle Park, Edinburgh

Scotland Under-21s return to Tynecastle on Friday evening for a crucial home qualifier against Belgium.

With both sides sitting second, level on 16 points in Group B, this match will be decisive in both sides' quest to qualify for next summer's European Championship in Slovakia.

Scotland lost narrowly against Spain at Tynecastle last month but bounced back to win 5-0 away to Malta to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Tickets for the match against Belgium can be purchased here, while Scotland Supporters Club (SSC) members go free.

Team News

Scotland's Under-21 squad are boosted by the returns of Josh Doig, Max Johnston and Connor Barron, who are all back after being a part of the 'A' squad in September, although Johnston did feature in Malta for the Under-21s after his exploits with the senior team.

Lewis Fiorini also returns after injury, although Cieran Slicker, Kieron Bowie, Ibane Bowat and Liam Morrison are all absent.

Matthew Anderson was also forced to withdraw after being named in the initial squad and he has been replaced by Robbie Fraser.

Pre-match Thoughts

The one new face in camp this time is Ryan One, who is the latest player to have been called up from Neil McFarlane's Under-19s group, and we caught up with him earlier in the week.

Reflecting on his first call-up and his footballing journey so path, he said: "I didn’t expect it at all because I’d been selected for the Under-19s but it was a great feeling.

"The standard in training has been really good but that’s what you’d expect with so many of these players playing first-team football. I’ve just tried to keep up with it but I think I’ve done well.

"I was at Hamilton from when I was very young and it was great for my development. John Rankin, especially was amazing for me, giving me my chance to play 30-odd games and that’s ultimately what helped me get my move.

"The move itself was quite last minute. I went down for a week at first to see how it was but I ended up signing a minute before the window deadline, so it was stressful! There were other clubs interested but I was glad I chose Sheffield United.

"It was crazy to make my debut at the Emirates Stadium and I didn’t expect it to be honest. We were getting beat heavily quite heavily so I thought ‘just try not to be nervous and try to make some sort of impact’.

"It would be a brilliant moment for me to make my Under-21 debut as well. I’ve played against Belgium at Under-19 level and this Belgium team will be even better.

"But we have lots of quality in this squad too, and hopefully we can play well and secure the result we need which will help us qualify."

You can read the full interview with Ryan in Friday's matchday programme.
