John William Campbell was born in Govan, Glasgow, on 2 October 1877. He died on 20 January 1919. Campbell played at outside right, sometimes at outside left, and had a successful career that took him around various clubs. Starting with Linthouse in 1893, he moved to Partick Thistle in 1894, and tried his luck in England two years later with Blackburn Rovers. In 1898 he returned to Scotland with Rangers, and this coincided with the peak of his career as his team won the Scottish League championship.
