James Davidson Gibson was born in Larkhall (Lanarkshire) on 12 June, 1901. He died on 1 January, 1978. An excellent defender at right half and centre half, he was not afraid to venture forward and contributed a good number of goals to his clubs, using his 6 ft 2 in height as a powerful asset. He played for two junior teams, Kirkintilloch Rob Roy and Ashfield before joining Partick Thistle just before his 20th birthday in May 1921. He played over 170 league matches before transferring to Aston Villa.
