James Paterson was born in Cowdenbeath on 15 June 1905.
A lively centre forward, he went from Camelon Juniors to Everton in 1927 but did not make a first team appearance before joining St Johnstone a year later. It was at Cowdenbeath, whom he joined in the summer of 1930, that he really came to prominence, netting 53 goals in 74 games over two seasons, and that earned him his Scotland call up for the continental tour of 1931.
