Raymond Struan McDonald Stewart was born in Stanley (Perthshire) on 7 September, 1959.
Ray Stewart showed great talent early on, winning five schools international caps before signing on at Dundee United, where he was nurtured by Jim McLean. After less than 50 first team appearances for the Tannadice club, in which time he was voted Scotlands Young Player of the Year, he was signed by West Ham United in August 1979 for a fee of around £400,000 - a record for a teenager at that time.
