Biography

Born in Somalia, Islam moved to Scotland with his family aged five. He joined Celtic when he was 10-years-old. He signed for English Premier League club Chelsea in September 2011.

Islam has represented Scotland at under-16, 17, 19, and 21 level, qualifying as a result of being schooled in the country for five years. He was the first player to switch to Scotland under this rule.

His first Scotland youth appearance came in the Sky Sports Victory Shield aged just 14, scoring in a 1-0 win over Wales.

At under-17 level, Islam has played for Scotland at the 2010 and 2011 UEFA European Under-17 Championship qualifying rounds, and at the 2011 and 2012 elite round stages.

He played at the 2013 UEFA European Under-19 Championship qualifying round where he scored a hat-trick in a 4-3 triumph over Switzerland.

In April 2012, he received his first call-up to the Scotland Under-21 squad for a friendly match against Italy. He became the youngest-ever player to represent Scotland at under-21 level when he came off the bench after an hour of play to make his debut aged 16 years and 197 days.

Islam netted his first under-21 goals in November 2012 when he scored a brace in a 3-2 friendly defeat to Portugal.

He made his competitive debut in March 2013 as Scotland beat Luxembourg 3-0 in a 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifier.
