Steven Archibald was born in Glasgow on 27 September 1956. The distinctive blond striker lost no time making an impression on his international debut, scoring within 20 minutes of coming on as a substitute for Kenny Dalglish against Portugal. One of the few Scottish talents to find success abroad, he began his career at Clyde in 1974 and was snapped up by Aberdeen in January 1978. At Pittodrie he played a major role in winning the Scottish League in 1980 and moved to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of that year for a record fee between Scottish and English clubs. He was top scorer in England in his first season down south, won the FA Cup in 1981 and 1982, as well as the UEFA Cup in 1984, shortly after which he joined Barcelona. After early success as league champions in 1985 and European Cup finalist in 1986 he never really sustained the impact he would have liked at the Camp Nou and returned to Scotland with Hibernian in 1988. He ended his playing career at a variety of clubs, some briefly: Espanol,, St Mirren Reading, Fulham, Clyde and finally in 1994 at East Fife, moving into management at Methil and later at Airdrie. |
