Robert Sime Aitken was born in Irvine (Ayrshire) on 24 November 1958. The rugged defender joined Celtic from Celtic Boys Club in 1975 and went on to make an enormous impact over the following 15 years at Celtic Park. Success came early with the team that won the double in 1977 and he went on to play in teams that won the league in 1979, 1981, 1982, and 1986, with further Scottish Cup winner medals in 1980 and 1985. The highlight of Roy’s career then came as he captained the club to another League and Scottish Cup double in 1988 - its centenary year - and his final honour was achieved a year later as Celtic again won the Scottish Cup in 1989. In the face of some criticism he moved to Newcastle United early in 1990 then returned to Scotland with St Mirren in the summer of 1991, still with enough verve to earn his last two Scotland caps. He ended his playing career briefly at Aberdeen and went on to make a name for himself as a coach. |
