What is the Player JOURNEY?
The Scottish FA player journey is designed to support Scottish Football to nurture players from 5 to 95 years of age. With a real focus on creating the right environment and culture, this strategy ensures that young players will enjoy the game while experiencing various playing opportunities, both informal and more formal.
Clubs are encouraged to offer informal, come and try football centres for their young people. For more committed players, clubs, leagues and associations can also offer more structured games, festivals and fixtures. There is no “one size fits all” in children’s football. Each child will have a different journey, depending on their level of interest, commitment and ability.
A supportive culture is vital to creating a positive experience in football. According to research, one of the primary reasons children leave sports is a lack of enjoyment. Therefore, the emphasis should be placed on creating an inclusive, fun, and low-pressure environment, especially in the earlier stages of development. Players should be free from the stress of competition and instead be encouraged to experiment, make mistakes, and explore their love of the game.
By focusing on fun, equal opportunities, and innovative games structures, the Scottish FA can ensure that players of all abilities and ambitions are given the opportunity to enjoy football and pursue their full potential. Implementing a research-driven approach to long-term player participation and development, we will not only produce better players but also create a more inclusive and enjoyable football culture.
