Vauxhall Under-17 International Challenge Match

Scotland 2 - 1 Romania

Tuesday 24th February 2015, kick-off 7pm

Rugby Park, Kilmarnock

Hendry (39'). Miller (60'); Petre (44')

Celtic duo Regan Hendry and Calvin Miller both got on the scoresheet as Scotland Under-17s beat Romania 2-1 at Rugby Park.

Scot Gemmill’s team stood up well against a good Romanian side and will have plenty to be confident about going into next month’s UEFA European Under-17 Championships elite qualifying group stage.

The home team were first to threaten, with Ian Smith releasing Mark Hill down the right wing after a neat one-two. Hill’s cross was just too fast for Miller though, who had made a late run at the back post.

Romania will join Scotland in the elite stages and showed their ability and speed throughout the first-half. Striker Niculae Carmat proved particularly troublesome and was unlucky with a powerful drive on 16 minutes.

But the Scotland defence – marshalled superbly by Dundee United's Harry Souttar – held up to the visitors' threat and had reason to celebrate just seconds before the half-time whistle.

A long ball over from the left wing was brought down by Mark Hill, who found Hendry in space in the box. The Celtic midfielder took a quick touch before blasting the ball past the Romanian keeper to the delight of the Rugby Park crowd.

Their happiness was short-lived though. Just minutes after the half time interval Captain Robby McCrorie’s kick-out presented substitute Adrian Petre with a one-on-one. The Romanian forward had all the time in the world to slot past the Scotland keeper and draw the game level.

All credit must go to Scot Gemmill’s youngsters therefore, as they  were able to wrestle back their advantage on the hour mark, as Daniel Harvie swung in an excellent ball from the left to set-up Miller for the winner.

Miller’s goal seemed to galvanise the Scotland team who held on comfortably for the final 20 minutes.

Hendry had one final opportunity to put Scotland 3-1 up on 70 mins after being set up after some trickery from substitute Frank Ross. There was to be no double for the Celtic player though, his shot blocked well by the Romanian defence.
