Once again the Associations in the South East Region lead the way in supporting the country’s development of young players. East Lothian Soccer Development Association which caters for primary-aged players playing 4-aside and 7-aside football will launch their new Futsal Programme this weekend at North Berwick Lesiure Centre.
ELSDA join the East of Scotland Soccer Development Association (Edinburgh & Midlothian) and the West Lothian Soccer Development Association in providing playing and skill development opportunities indoors for young players during a winter shutdown in January and February. The ELSDA programme which is being led by their Chairman and Secretary, Gordon Nicol will see activity for the 9s and 10s age group at North Berwick Sports Centre and the 11s and 12s age groups at Meadowmill Sports Complex over a six week period.
Mark Munro, Scottish FA Regional Manager has been impressed by the developments in the game in the South East Region over the past few years, “The associations catering for children and youths in the Region have been particularly proactive over the past few years. Prior to the launch of the New National Player Pathway for the game this year, all four associations catering for primary aged players had introduced a winter break in January and February when the outdoor conditions are problematic but most recently, have worked closely with the Scottish FA to develop winter indoor futsal programmes which is fantastic. We have great people in the Region and great associations and they continue to lead the way on a national level”.
It is interesting to note that Futsal has been used by many countries as a formal tool for developing players and in the past, and many of the top world class footballers played Futsal in their youth and credit it with supporting their footballing development; players of the calibre of Pele, Zico, Ronaldinho, Kaka and Lionel Messi to name but a few of the South American legends who all played and enjoyed Futsal.
