Destiny Church, based in Gorgie, is attended by a large number of African families who come to worship on a Sunday. Parents attending the services recognised that not many of their children were active and wanted some sort of activity after the services to take place so that the children could become more active.
South East Diversity and Inclusion Officer Jennifer Malone, facilitated a consultation at which 14 parents attended. At this consultation it was decided that it would be beneficial to pilot 8 weeks of football sessions on Sunday afternoons after church to encourage participation. The first session was attended by 26 children and 5 volunteers.
On the back of this, a link to support community integration, Big Hearts – a community leg of Hearts FC - have offered the group places in their forthcoming holiday camps to the children involved.
