Team News
Scotland Women’s Under-19s saw Head Coach Gary Doctor include players from the successful Under-17s team in the 20-strong squad to face Belgium in the first of two back-to-back international friendlies to prepare for the Round Two UEFA European qualifiers in April.
As It Happened
An eager Scotland started the match looking to press for a quick goal, as a shot from Sophie Black forced Belgium’s goalkeeper into an early save.
The Scots soon followed up with some impressive counterplay, with loose passes from the Belgians allowing Scotland to play deep into their opponent’s half and keep the pressure firmly on the Belgians to defend.
Some good build-up play from the box saw Jess Husband break her way up the wing and play a terrific pass through to Laura Berry, but the under-fire Belgian team were able to deny Berry a shot on goal.
As Belgium found their way into Scotland’s half, Braelynn Galt made a comfortable save to ensure the Scots’ hard work would not see them concede before the break.
Off the back of a free kick, Scotland’s Galt was called on again, punching the ball clear of danger and gave the young Scots the chance to lead the charge pressing forward in search of the first goal of the match.
The second half had early chances from both sides, with Galt ensuring the danger was cut out with a lunging save that stopped a dangerous cross from the wing. Galt continued to show a stalwart presence between the goals, stopping the advancing Belgian attack from getting past her.
A determined run from Jess Husband again saw her charge up the wing, breaking through the Belgian midfield and avoiding being taken down on several occasions, playing a through ball straight to Sophia Martin, who was just beaten to the ball by the keeper.
Despite a strong defensive performance, an errant pass was pounced on by Belgium’s Marthe Hens, sneaking a shot past Galt and giving the Belgians the lead late in the game.
Although a goal down, the young Scots did not let up. A swift pass from Darra Dawson through to Izzy Young gave the forward a chance to line up the Belgian goal, but she was brought down just outside the box.
The awarded free kick was teed up by Dawson, who dummied a shot and stepped over the ball, leaving Jess Husband to strike with precision, curling the ball around the wall and into the top corner of Marie Pues’ goal to bring Scotland back into the game.

An inspired Scotland played for the win, with both Martin and Dawson vying to get to Belgian passes before they met their target.
The match ended with a goal apiece, but Scotland looked the more likely of the two teams to get the win on the day, leaving the second fixture against Belgium as an exciting prospect to build on before they turn their focus to the European qualifiers in April.
