The Scottish Gas Men's Scottish Cup Third Round Draw took place at Hampden Park on Sunday evening, with 2008 winner Kevin Thomson conducting the draw.

The former Hibernian and Rangers midfielder joined host Gordon Duncan at the National Stadium to draw the 20 ties that will take place on the weekend of Saturday, 29 November.

This round sees the Championship and League One sides enter the competition, joining the 20 sides who have advanced from the Second Round.

Benburb were one of the stories of Round Two after Sir Alex Ferguson paid for their overnight accomodation in their win over Wick Academy, and the Glasgow side have been rewarded with a home tie against Montrose.

2021 Scottish Cup winners and Championship table-toppers St Johnstone are at home to Cove Rangers, while the division's second-placed side Partick Thistle are away to Forfar Athletic.

Ayr United are at home to Highland League Turriff United, with Raith Rovers hosting Alloa Athletic.

Neil Lennon has won the Scottish Cup on a number of occasions as a player and a manager and his Dunfermline side are at home to Queen of the South.

Lowland League Tranent host 2015 Scottish Cup winners Inverness Caledonian Thistle in an intriguing tie, while another Highland side, Ross County, are heading east to face Banks O'Dee.

Kevin Thomson suffered Scottish Cup heartache early in his career with a couple of near misses but he did get his hands on it in 2008, playing the full 90 minutes as Rangers defeated Queen of the South 3-2.

Speaking after the draw, he said: "My first memories of the Scottish Cup were more disappointment than elation. Obviously Hibs had had that monkey on their back for so long without winning the Scottish Cup.

"The furthest I got with Hibs was the Semi-Final when we lost to Dundee United and I also lost to Hearts in the Semi-Final so that was a killer.

"We lost 4-0 and finished with nine men so, growing up a Hibs fan, that was a nightmare.

"Then moving to Rangers it gives you the better chance of winning it every year.

"It was a bit surreal the year we won it in 2008 because we were coming off such a low of losing the UEFA Cup Final a few days before it.

"Bittersweet would be the way to describe it. I was proud as punch to get my hands on the Scottish Cup though and it was a wonderful day.

"We were running on empty a bit by the final but we were 2-0 up at half-time. I remember Walter Smith gave us a rocket at half-time and I was a bit surprised because I thought I'd been doing okay but it was typical of the great man, because he could obviously feel something happening and within ten minutes of the second half it was 2-2.

"So it was probably a justifiable rant but luckily Kris Boyd got us over the line with a 25-yarder into the top corner.

"When you look back you probably didn't enjoy it as much as you should've because you're looking at the next one so you actually wish you'd relished it more at the time."

Thomson may not have been on the pitch in a final again but he was part of the squad in 2016 when his beloved Hibernian lifted the Scottish Cup to end their 114 year wait.

"I remember I played in the derbies in the Scottish Cup that season," he recalled. "Then I was on the bench in the Semi-Final against Dundee United and I was around the squad in the final.

"I missed out on the matchday squad which was a bit of a sore one at the time but the way the day transpired, and being part of the team, it was still a great experience.

"I went back to help the young boys and I knew my role. It was great to help the likes of John McGinn, Dylan McGeouch and Liam Henderson. My role was to help support them and the games I played in were a bonus."

The Scottish Cup has been lifted by Celtic in six out of the last nine seasons but with Celtic defeated by Aberdeen in the Final last season and not appearing as dominant in the league this season, Thomson believes the Scottish Cup is wide open.

He said: "I think everyone will be fancying it this season, especially with the way Celtic and Rangers have started the season. Hibs have had a bit of a slow start as well but they've picked up now with back-to-back wins and Hearts are flying too.

"Normally you'd expect one of the Glasgow teams to be there or there abouts but with the way both have started they maybe don't quite have the same fear factor.

"Clearly that can change but I would still say it's wide open and plenty of teams will be fancying it."

Following retirement from playing, Thomson moved into coaching and he won promotion from League Two with Kelty Hearts in 2022 before departing the Fife club.

He was also back in at the Rangers academy last season and the 41-year-old admitted he would be open to a return to management at some point, though he is more than happy with his current role with his own Kevin Thomson Academy.

He said: "You never say never. If the right opportunity came along and somebody valued you and wanted to give you that opportunity and it worked for you and the employer, then great.

"But I've got my own academy which is something I've built up and something I'm really proud of. It'll have been going nine years come November.

"I've also got two young boys in the Hibs academy so I spend a lot of time supporting them as well on their journey.

"I quite enjoy my own watch but if the right opportunity came up and someone valued me as an individual then of course you're always open."
