In the build-up to the final two World Cup qualifiers and following on from the release of the new Scotland home jersey, adidas caught up with Lewis Ferguson to hear how he’s feeling ahead of camp.
From bouncing back after injury to the confidence he gets from his adidas gear, Lewis shares what’s driving him forward - and how the energy of the supporters continues to push the team to new heights.
After sadly missing the Euros due to your injury, did that setback shape your mindset at all heading into Scotland’s World Cup campaign?
“Yes, it did, it played on my mind a lot after the injury that I was going to miss something I’ve dreamed of as a kid which is representing my country on the biggest stage. It’s probably shaped my mindset in terms of being more motivated than ever and driven to achieve this dream this time around to take this country to a World Cup.”
Your goal against Greece was a turning point in Scotland’s qualification push. Can you walk us through that moment and what it meant personally?
“We work on set pieces a lot in training and go into detail, so as a team we know we are dangerous from these situations, I just remember trying to get my head on the cross and as I land from the jump the ball ricocheted and landed perfectly in front of me, there were a lot of bodies in front so my only thought was to smash it high on target and thankfully it went in.”
After the excitement and high adrenaline of a match, how do you like to unwind and reset before the next game?
”It depends on the timing of a game as you can imagine it’s difficult to sleep after a later game but in general I like to get a good meal that I enjoy, put on my recovery boots and watch some tv and try to take my mind away from football.”
From training sessions to match day, how important is it for you to feel confident in your football gear - your Predator football boots, the adidas kit, everything - when preparing for a tournament as big as the World Cup?
”It’s really important for me. It’s part of you when you are out there performing in front of thousands of people in these big games so it’s important you feel as confident and comfortable as possible.”
The new Scotland jersey just dropped - deep navy with a central crest, subtle Saltire detailing, and bold adidas stripes. Fans are buzzing. What was your first reaction when you saw it up close?
“Same reaction from me, I was really happy with it, I like the badge in the middle of the kit it’s something a bit different and it has a little old school feeling to it, the small details are really nice and it’s an all round clean kit.”

Scotland’s squad seems tighter than ever - what do you think keeps the team so united, especially during the pressure of a World Cup campaign?
“We have good characters and personalities within the team, of course everyone is a little bit different, but the mix is really good, I think having a lot of leaders and experience in the squad also makes a big difference. And it’s a squad just full of good people, never mind the football side, that goes for the players and the staff. The manager plays a part in setting that culture.
Scotland is known for its loyal and lively travelling support. How big of an impact does their support have on you as you play away from home?
“Massive impact, we know by now and expect now that anywhere we go they will be there in numbers, and we are so grateful for it, the way of repaying the incredible support they show is giving them results that hopefully help us qualify.”
