Grassroots hero Trevor Wilson has been named winner of the Scottish FA's South West region's Volunteer in Youth Football award, in the 2012 Scottish FA Grassroots Awards, presented by McDonald’s and the Sunday Mail.
The Grassroots Awards celebrate those young players, coaches and volunteers in the six Scottish FA regions, who dedicate their time to supporting grassroots football in their local community.
Trevor Wilson has been an inspiration to the members of Lochar Thistle Youths AFC and was one of their founding members.
Now with the club in its 25th year he has been a member of the club since he founded it back in 1987 – first as a coach, then as a committee member, and now as its chair.
Trevor's incredible hard work has ensured that local children throughout Dumfries and Galloway have the opportunity to play football and become involved in sport.
As winner of the regional Volunteer in Youth Football award Trevor will now be included in the national shortlist, with the National Award winners being announced at a special ceremony at Hampden Park on Thursday September 27th.
Graeme Mathie, football development officer for the South West region, said: “Trevor is a legend of the game in our eyes and it is right that we take the time, not just to recognise his dedication, but also to say thank you for the enthusiasm and time that Trevor gives up.
"Without the thousands of volunteers, like Trevor, dedicating their time and effort passing on their skills to others, grassroots football in local communities simply wouldn’t happen.
"I want to wish Trevor the best of luck in the national awards later this year, and we look forward to hearing the results.”
Trevor said: “It is an honour to be recognised in this way for my work in grassroots football. I am lucky enough to have worked with many very dedicated and hardworking people and this award is also for them.”
Other winners from the South West FA include:
• Best Volunteer in Adult Football – Hugh Carswell
• Best Volunteer in Disability Football – Dave McKenna
• Best Volunteer in Schools Football – Bob McWilliam
• Best Volunteer in Girls and Women’s Football – Billy Alexander
