FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 Qualifier
Scotland v Spain
Tuesday, 12 April 2022, kick off 7:35pm
Hampden Park, Glasgow
Scotland face a tough test against group leaders Spain as they to return play in front of home fans at Hampden Park for the first time in 2022.
Pedro Martinez Losa’s side will be out to avenge the defeat they suffered against Spain last year, as they return to World Cup qualifying duty.
Scotland – wearing the new, special edition bespoke Scotland Women’s National Team home kit for the first time - will be looking to strengthen their grip on second place in their group, where they currently sit five points behind the leaders and one point above Hungary who are in third.
Previous meetings
Scotland endured a disappointing night on their last meeting with Spain in November, going down 8-0 to the side who currently sit seventh in the FIFA world rankings and boast the current Best FIFA Women's Player in Alexia Putellas.
Prior to that, the most recent match had been an impressive 1-0 triumph for Scotland in a EURO 2017 group decider. Caroline Weir scored the only goal that day, as a dominant Scotland could not find the two-goal result that they required to progress in the competition
Team news
The return of Erin Cuthbert and Lisa Evans is a major boost for Scotland, after they both missed the recent Pinatar Cup through injury. While Rachel Corsie, who was also only forced to sit the first two matches of that tournament through illness, is fit to captain the side on their first outing at Hampden Park since the 1-1 draw with Ukraine in November.
Pre-match thoughts
Head Coach Pedro Martinez Losa is pleased with what he's seen across the extended training camp at Oriam and hopes to see that reflected in tonight's big game.
He said: "It’s a match we’re looking to give a good account of ourselves in and we want to progress in the way we compete and the way we play.
"We’ve analysed the game – and all the games Spain have played. It’s the same patterns of play and they do it very, very well. I’m not saying we will be able to neutralise all their threats, but we have been working hard to make sure we execute our game plan better.
"As individuals and as a collective, we want to be able to withstand any pressure that Spain applies to us, while exposing any weaknesses or spaces that they leave.
"It’s a fresh game, but it’s only human nature for the players to have the loss against the same team last time in their heads. We can use that in our own way for a little extra motivation.
"I was probably a bit emotional myself when I watched it back the first time. Those feelings were still running high. I’ve watched aspects of the game three or four more times since with my staff and we have clear opinions on what we saw.
"It sounds strange, but there were parts of the game when I thought we played well and there are things to build on.
"I’m really happy with what I’ve seen from the players in this training camp. There’s been a transformation in the dynamism of training – the mentality, concentration and energy.
"They’ve established standards in training and behaviours that really inspire me. I see a totally different team and the atmosphere has been fantastic."
