With a place in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification play-offs secured, Scotland now welcome group winners Denmark to Hampden Park for the final match of the campaign.

Following Friday night’s victory over Moldova, Scotland have now won five matches in a row for the first time in more than a decade. They now know they must take at least a point from the Danes in order to be seeded in the play-offs and secure a home tie in the semi-finals.

Previous Meetings

The sides last met in Copenhagen in September, when a quickfire first-half double for the Danes secured victory for the home side.

The sides have met 17 times over the years, Scotland holding the edge with ten victories to Denmark’s seven. The matches have traditionally been tight affairs, with the only match where the margin of victory was greater than two goals taking place in 1972, Jim Bone, Lou Macari, Joe Harper and Willie Morgan giving Scotland victory in Copenhagen.

The sides last met at Hampden in a friendly in 2016, when Matt Ritchie’s strike gave Scotland victory in a match that John McGinn made his debut in, earning man of the match in the process.

Team News

With Nathan Patterson suspended after being booked in Moldova, Steve Clarke has called up in-form Celtic right back Anthony Ralston to the squad.

Lyndon Dykes has joined up with the squad after missing the Moldova match due to suspension, while Ryan Christie is available having also missed Friday’s match.

Scott McTominay will miss the match after failing to recover from the virus that saw him sent home from the squad’s training camp in Spain earlier this week.

Pre-match thoughts

Scotland Head Coach Steve Clarke: “The ultimate aim hasn’t been achieved. The ultimate aim is to get to Qatar 2022.

“To be in a position coming out of the group stage that we’re still involved going into the March play-off games is where we were after we lost to Denmark away.

“We realised that second place was attainable and what we had to aim for. Five consecutive victories has made sure that we secured that one but the ultimate aim is still ahead.”
