A talented female player from Orkney has become the first player from her island to take part in the Scottish FA’s North Region Performance Squad.
Ruth Clark, 14, plays for Orkney Women’s FC and was spotted by Scottish FA girls and women’s club development officer Finella Annand when competing at Highlands and Islands tournaments.
Finella said: “Ruth stood out at the tournaments as a very talented young player with a lot of potential.
“The tournaments offered the platform for her to be identified, and without them she would have been unable to demonstrate her ability.
“It’s great to be able to reach out and provide opportunities to players in all corners of the North Region.”
Ruth has shown remarkable commitment to attend the performance squad sessions in Aberdeen.
She catches a flight every Wednesday night from the archipelago in northern Scotland to Aberdeen, attends training, before staying overnight and catching another flight home in the morning.
The Scottish FA’s North regional manager, Graeme Sutherland, said : “The commitment both Ruth and her family make to attend the sessions in Aberdeen cannot be underestimated and there won’t be many players who jump on a plane for an hour to get to training.
“We are delighted that she has fitted into the squad well and credit to all those who provide support both morally and financially to ensure she can continue to attend.”
