Scotland will be seeded amongst the third pot of nations ahead of the draw for the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers, following last night’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Israel at Hampden Park.
Alex McLeish’s side will find themselves alongside teams such as Northern Ireland, Slovakia and the Republic of Ireland in the third tier, with the draw to be made on Sunday 2 December in Dublin.
World champions France headline the top tier of seeds, alongside the likes of Belgium, Spain and England.
Meanwhile, Germany find themselves in pot two for the draw following their relegation from UEFA Nations League A, along with countries such as Iceland, Sweden and Wales.
The qualifying campaign will begin on 21 March 2019, with the top two nations in each group qualifying automatically for UEFA Euro 2020.
Scotland has already secured a playoff place by virtue of topping UEFA Nations League group C1, should McLeish’s men fail to qualify automatically through their qualifying group.
Key dates for the diary:
— Scotland National Team (@ScotlandNT) November 20, 2018
➡️ EURO Qualifier Draw: 2 December 2018
➡️ EURO Qualifiers: March - November 2019
➡️ Play-Off Final Venue Draw: November 2019
➡️ UEFA EURO 2020 Draw: December 2019
➡️ UEFA EURO 2020 Play-Offs: March 2020
In that outcome, the highest ranked team from UEFA Nations League C would take on the fourth-ranked side in a single-leg knockout match, before progressing to take on the winner of the match between the second and third-ranked teams.
Currently, that would mean Scotland would face Finland at home, before a potential tie against either Serbia or Norway with the venue to be decided by random draw.
However, should any of the quartet qualify by rights through the qualifying group, then their spot in the playoffs would go to the next-best ranked nation in the UEFA Nations League C standings.
The UEFA Euro 2020 playoffs will get underway on 26 March 2020, with the finals tournament – in which Hampden Park will be a host venue – kicking off on 12 June 2020.
