UEFA Under-17 Championship Finals
Scotland 1-5 Portugal
Lod Municipal Stadium, Lod
Tuesday, 17 May (6pm kick-off, UK)
Scorers
Scotland: Mackenzie (62). Portugal: Lima (8), Rodrigues (26), Veloso (pen. 37), Moreira (69), Ribeiro (73).
Portugal showed just why they are considered one of the favourites for this year's European Under-17 Championships, with a comprehensive 5-1 win over Scotland.
Brian McLaughlin's men will have learned a lot from a humbling opener, with only Magnus Mackenzie's moment of magic to show from a tough 90 minutes.
Team News
Charlie McArthur pulled on the captain's armband, having been nominated by his team-mates as one of the leaders of the group - alongside Dylan Reid and Jacob Pazikas.
Bobby Wales won a place on the bench, having replaced Liam Harvey in the squad just prior to leaving Scotland for Israel.
As It Happened
It's fair to say an impressive Portugal side started on the front foot, though there was a degree of good fortune to their opener after eight minutes.
Leonardo Barroso burst down the left before picking out Jose Rodrigues with his cross.
His acrobatic effort unfortunately rebounded off Louis Jackson into the path of a grateful Ivan Lima, who reacted quickest to lob the ball home over the onrushing Jacob Pazikas.
It was 2-0 on 26 minutes when Lima burst by Greig Allan and fed Rodrigues, who was not to be denied this time and left Pazikas with no chance with a clinical finish.
They owed their third to dangerous wing play as well. Barroso's cross from the left flashed across to the opposite flank, only to be turned back in by Afonso Moreira. Jack Kingdon could do little about the ball striking his arm, and watched in dismay as referee Thomas Gary Owen pointed to the spot.
Joao Veloso converted the subsequent penalty.
Scotland's best effort came just before the break. Rory Wilson was sharp to latch on to a long ball, but the bounce didn't sit kindly and his eventual effort drifted just wide of the target.
There were two changes at the break, with Ethan Laidlaw and Lennon Miller replacing Lewis O'Donnell and Bailey Rice respectively.
Miller was involved as Scotland reduced the deficit on 62 minutes, with a real moment of quality from Mackenzie.
Miller played the ball out to the left wing-back, who cut in on his right before lashing the ball by keeper Diogo Fernandes.
It was then Miller's turn to threaten, with a curled free-kick from 25 yards that forced a scrambling Fernandes to tip wide at his bottom right-hand corner.
Portugal upped the ante and restored their three-goal lead from a counter-attack that followed that corner.
Substitute Manuel Mendonca's clearance found Moreira, who ran from his own half at speed before slotting the ball beyond Pazikas.
It was 5-1 four minutes later thanks to a clever dinked finish from Rodrigo Ribeiro.
Scotland are back in action on Friday, with a trip to the Ramat Gan Stadium to take on Denmark. It's a 12.30pm kick-off (UK time) and you can watch the game live on the BBC Sport website, iPlayer and their Red Button channel.
