Greece: Christopoulos (27)

In a frustrating night in Athens, Scotland lost 1-0 against a Greece side who took an early lead and despite their best efforts, Scot Gemmill's side failed to mount a comeback.

Scotland had a number of opportunities but failed to hit the back of the net in a match which ended their hopes of playing at next year's Euros.

Czech Republic won the qualification group, with Scotland finishing two points behind them, in third.

As it happened

Goalscorers from Thursday night Glenn Middleton and Connor McLennan were introduced into the starting line-up and Scotland began the game well, dominating possession.

With 10 minutes on the clock Fraser Hornby had an opportunity just inside the box but smashed the ball over the bar.

Greece were often quick on the counter and just moments later Botos was on the end of a slick move but couldn’t hit the target.

With 27 minutes scored, Greece went ahead against the run of play.

Katranis broke down the wing to cross and Christopoulos slotted the ball beyond Doohan, putting Scotland 1-0 behind.

Scotland were knocked off their stride but had a chance before the break when Glenn Middleton was presented with the ball close to goal he hit it wide of the target. Scotland trudged to the dressing rooms at the break with it all to do.

At the start of the second half Middleton worked his way down the left wing, crossing to Barry Maguire who stabbed a shot wide of goal.

Greece were looking for a second and they were close to scoring it if it wasn’t for a sharp save from Ross Doohan.

With 72 minutes on the clock David Turnbull made an appearance from the bench and immediately had an opportunity but contrived to put the ball over the bar.

Scotland were pushing hard for an equaliser and at the other end Doohan was called into action when Greece were clean through but the Ross County stopper was able to pull off the save.
