UEFA Women’s Under-17 Elite Round
Germany 5-0 Scotland
Wednesday 20th March, 2019
Oriam, Edinburgh

Germany: Sophie Weidauer (10), Nicole Woldmann (30, 49), Carlotta Wamser (32), Emilie Bernhardt (37)

Scotland Women’s Under-17 team began their UEFA Elite Round campaign with a tough lesson from a strong Germany side, as the Germans came out on top 5-0 at Oriam against a spirited Scotland side.

Pauline Macdonald’s side started spritely when good work from Monica Forsyth on the wing saw a cross come into the box causing problems for the German defence. Pauline Carolotta Nelles eventually claimed the ball eliminating the threat.

It was from then on that the German side began to take charge of the game with Gia Corley causing all sorts of problems for the Scotland defence. It was good play from Corley which saw her play the ball through to Germany’s Sophie Weidauer, who smashed it into the top corner for the opener in the tenth minute.

Germany continued to dictate much of the play throughout the first half with efforts hitting the post and side netting.

Scotland ventured into the attacking half once more when Forysth’s cross was put into a good area again. Unfortunately, there were no takers for the chance. Two minutes later, Nicole Woldmann made Scotland pay with neat play coming in off the wing and firing it low past Alicia Yates in goal to double their lead.

The Germans, with their tails up, found the back of the net once again with Carlotta Wamser curling a spectacular effort over Yates to make it three in the 32nd minute.

There was to be one more goal before the half time whistle went, when tricky play from Corley put it on a plate for Emilie Bernhardt to make it 4-0 on the 37th minute despite the Scotland defence’s best efforts on the line.

Two spectacular saves from Alicia Yates before the whistle ensured there was no more damage done before the break.

Ulrike Ballweg made a couple of switches to her side at the break but Germany still started the strongest with Weidauer grabbing her second of the game from close range on the 49th minute.

A brave second half performance from Scotland limited the visitors to fewer chances, Wamser coming the closest with her long range effort hitting the bar. Scotland substitute, Bayley Hutchison, also looked sharp when she entered the fray.

The side will now be looking to put things right with the next two Elite Round games coming up fast against Norway and Republic of Ireland on Saturday 23rd and Tuesday 26th.
