The Scottish FA has launched a comprehensive, nationwide Grassroots Survey, aimed at discovering just how attractive the beautiful game is to all participants across Scotland.
The Grassroots Survey is the first of such a wide-ranging nature to be run within Scotland and is designed to capture the opinions of participants in all areas of football – from players young and old to referees, volunteers and coaches.
The data gathered in the survey will be used to help celebrate and accentuate the positives that emerge, while also identifying areas of concern within the game in order that they can be addressed.
Six surveys have been launched in total, each targeted at a different group participating in grassroots football: club volunteers; coaches; parents; referees; both current and lapsed adult players; and young players.
Each of the surveys asks the same core questions but has additional questions tailored to the target audience, such as coaching qualifications or refereeing experience.
The Scottish FA are committed to acting on the information gathered through the Grassroots Survey and will publish the results of the survey in autumn later this year.

Andy Gould, Head of Football Development at the Scottish FA: “The data captured from this survey will provide us with a sound base upon which to build upon over the coming years.
“It is a vital piece of work and I would encourage all referees, coaches and volunteers involved in the game at grassroots level to take a few minutes of their time to tell us what they think so that we can work together to improve our wonderful sport.”
The adult players’, young players’ and parents’ surveys will be delivered to a representative sample of Scotland’s population by Kantar TNS, one of the largest research organisations in the world, who are endorsed by UEFA.
The Grassroots Survey is the latest step in the Scottish FA’s drive to harvest the opinions of everyone involved in Scottish football in order to use that information to influence decisions affecting the national game.
In the past year, the Scottish FA has conducted research in numerous areas, including fan experience, girls’ and women’s football, value for money and governance of the game.
The information gathered in these surveys has already been used to drive action in a wide variety of ways, from the new Scotland Supporters Club membership scheme, to the Scottish Cup clubs’ financial distribution, to the price and size of a match programme.
