The Scottish FA’s referee development programme has been recognised by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA), with the initiative nominated for a 2018 SQA Star Award.

The programme, founded in 2011 and delivered to over 450 school pupils in 2017, has been shortlisted for the SQA Star Award for Promoting Inclusion, alongside two initiatives from Glasgow Clyde College.

Run in partnership with the SQA and Specsavers, the referee development programme is a key component of the Scottish FA’s strategy to encourage participation in officiating in Scottish football. Designed to be delivered in schools across the country, candidates who successfully complete the two stages of the course – laws of the game and practical refereeing – will be able to join their local Referees’ Association.

The awards ceremony will take place next month at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.
