The South West Region saw an action packed weekend on the 10th and 11th of September with no less than five different regional events taking place.
The main focus of the weekend was the South West Mega Fest which was held in partnership with Mcdonald’s. The event which was scheduled over Saturday and Sunday had over 120 teams registered for the two days. Unfortunately due to the poor weather Sunday could not go ahead however Saturday's festival seen over 70 teams play others from all over Ayrshire. The festival which was run in conjunction with the three youth leagues in Ayrshire CYFA, NASA and the WOSYFA was held at Kilwinning Sports Club. Big thanks goes to all the teams who took part in the event as well as Kilwinning Sports Club.
Coach Education is one of the priority functions of the Scottish FA and the weekend seen two separate courses take place. The first was the children’s level 4 at Toryglen which was held over the Saturday and Sunday. This was the second week of the course which is currently being delivered by both the West and South West Regions. The course has 40 participants split between both regions and two of our own tutors John Brown and Paul McDonald were there delivering the course.
Sunday seen 24 eager participants take part in a children’s level 2 course at Greenwood Academy, Dreghorn. The course was delivered by Craig Hamilton the football development officer for North Ayrshire. All coaches had previously taken part in the early touches Level 1 course which is the first step on the children’s pathway.
The South West Region was also part of the delivery of an Early Touches course in South Lanarkshire. The course was delivered in partnership with Strathclyde Police, South Lanarkshire Council, The Criminal Justice Authority and Choose life. David White of Ayr United delivered the course on behalf of the South West Regions part of the Moving the Goalposts Project. This scheme uses football to help keep young people off the streets and away from crime.
Both NASA and WOSYFA (North Ayrshire Soccer Association and West of Scotland Youth Football Association) held their own 4 v 4 festivals. These festivals are scheduled to take place on the alternate Weeks from the South West Festivals. Over 50 teams took part between the two festivals, which were a huge success. These festivals are taking place with the full support of the Scottish FA South West Region.
