Opportunities for girls to play football in the Scottish FA’s West Region during winter months are greater than ever.
The regional team operates winter indoor football festivals at the Super Soccer facility in Glasgow where 60 under-11 girls, from clubs in Glasgow, East Renfrewshire, Renfrewshire and Inverclyde, have been attending on a Saturday morning for eight weeks.
Corrie Campbell, girls’ and women’s football development officer for the Scottish FA, said: “The aims of the sessions were to have fun, develop skills and gain experience of playing games.
“The indoor activity allows girls to keep playing during the winter months before taking part in the West Region weekly 7-a-side fixtures which are due to start in May.
“The winter festival has provided a great stepping stone for the young female footballers and coaches before playing 7-a-side football.”
The regional manager for the area Paul McNeill said he was encouraged by the growth of the girls’ game in his patch.
He said: “There is huge passion and commitment going into growing the female game in the West Region.
“We have been delighted to be able to support the game during the difficult winter months. I hope they benefit when the 7-a-side league starts up in May.”
