UEFA Nations League
Scotland v Armenia
Wednesday, 8 June 2022 - kick off 7:45pm
Hampden Park, Glasgow
Scotland begin their UEFA Nations League campaign on Wednesday at home to Armenia, looking to put the disappointment of their FIFA World Cup Play-off Semi-final defeat to Ukraine behind them.
The Scots know only too well the importance of the Nations League, having used it as method of qualification for Euro 2020, while a strong performance in this competition will also help secure a higher pot in the draws for future tournament qualifiers.
Scotland are in group B1, where they will once again come up against Ukraine, as well as Republic of Ireland and Wednesday's opponents Armenia.
Armenia may be ranked 92nd in the world, but Steve Clarke's side were served a warning of their threat on Saturday, as they watched them send Republic of Ireland to a shock 1-0 defeat in Yerevan in their group opener.
Team News
Lyndon Dykes has been forced to withdraw from the Scotland squad with a thigh strain, after coming off at half-time against Ukraine.
Lewis Ferguson is also a doubt for the match having missed training ahead of the match, but Scotland have received a boost with Nathan Patterson returning to full training after missing the Play-off Semi-final as he recovers from ankle surgery.
Pre Match Thoughts
Scotland head coach Steve Clarke said: "When you've played at the top level of professional football you know that the disappointments are big disappointments and the fact we've not had one for a while makes it hurt even more.
"But that games gone, we have to move on and we have to start our next unbeaten run against Armenia at Hampden.
"As a nation we realise that the UEFA Nations League gave us a chance for entry for Euro 2020.
"We want to be competitive, we were a little disappointed we could've finish top of the last league B and we would love to finish top (this time) but we know we're up against good opponents.
"I thought Armenia did very well against Republic of Ireland, sat in well at the right times, defended well, kept a good shape to their team and they were a threat on the counter attack - we'll need to be at our best to win the game but hopefully we will be at our best
"What we've achieved over the last three years since I took over the job is I really feel the national team and the Tartan Army have come together and it's because of that support, strength and belief the Tartan Army have in us that we've started going on these good runs.
"I'm sure everyone who is there on Wednesday night will be behind the team from the first minute and that's what we need."
