Scotland have qualified for a fourth successive UEFA European Under-17 Championship finals after completing a hat-trick of elite round victories with a 1-0 win over Switzerland this afternoon.

Glenn Middleton’s first-half penalty ensured all three points for Scot Gemmill’s side to seal first place in qualifying group and earn Scotland automatic qualification for this year’s finals in Croatia.

Scotland have reached the finals with a 100% win record having claimed maximum points in both the qualifying round and the elite round, scoring 16 goals and conceding only one.

Following a 6-1 win over Montenegro on Friday and a 1-0 triumph over Serbia on Sunday, Scotland came into today’s match knowing a point would be enough to guarantee qualification.

Scotland were gifted a golden opportunity to take the lead midway through the first half when Swiss defender Marchand was judged to have handled in the penalty area.

Norwich City forward Middleton stepped up and smashed the ball down middle of the goal to net his fourth goal in three matches and give the Scots the advantage.

Switzerland, requiring a win of their own to have any chance of advancing to the finals, applied pressure on the Scotland defence in the second half but they could not trouble goalkeeper Josh Donaldson and Gemmill’s side earned all three points.

Scotland will now travel to Croatia in May to participate in this year’s 16-team finals in confident mood.
