With Gordon Strachan's Scotland squads meeting up this week for the upcoming matches against Czech Republic and Denmark, we take a look at how the players fared with their clubs in this weekend’s fixtures.
Captains duel in Premier League clash
Darren Fletcher and Russell Martin captained West Bromwich Albion and Norwich City respectively at the Hawthorns on Saturday. It was Martin’s team who came out on top though, with the Canaries earning a vital three points in their Barclays Premier League relegation battle. Steven Naismith also featured for Norwich City, coming on for the final 18 minutes.
Elsewhere in England’s top-flight, Matt Ritchie’s Bournemouth lost 3-0 to title-chasing Tottenham Hotspur, Ikechi Anya grabbed an assist for Watford but was on the wrong side of a 2-1 score-line at home to Stoke City, while Alan Hutton’s Aston Villa lost 1-0 at Swansea.
Scots feature as Celtic extend lead at the top
Celtic’s Premiership victory over Kilmarnock featured five players who have been called up to the Scotland squads this week. Craig Gordon, Charlie Mulgrew, Kieran Tierney, Scott Brown and Leigh Griffiths all played at Rugby Park as Celtic extended their lead over Aberdeen at the top of the table to four points.
Kenny McLean’s first-half penalty had given Aberdeen the lead against Motherwell at Fir Park. However, goals in the 73rd and 75th minutes from the hosts sealed a victory for Mark McGhee’s side.
In the Scottish Championship, John McGinn played in Hibernian’s 2-1 defeat to Raith Rovers at Stark’s Park.
Promotion battle heats up in English Championship
The race to reach the Premier League intensified this weekend in the English Championship, with Scots at the forefront of the action.
Chris Martin played 90 minutes in Derby County’s 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, with Oliver Burke playing the final 20 minutes of the Brian Clough Trophy for Forest.
Jamie Murphy’s Brighton and Hove Albion maintained their promotion credentials with a 2-1 victory away at MK Dons, while Hull City – who had Allan McGregor, Andy Robertson and Robert Snodgrass all starting – lost to a late goal on Friday night against Middlesbrough.
Tony Watt came off the bench for Blackburn Rovers – who had Grant Hanley sent-off - to set-up Shane Duffy’s winner away at Brentford. Liam Bridcutt also had an assist on Saturday at Elland Road, but Leeds United went on to lose 4-1 at home to Huddersfield Town.
