Scotland will learn their opponent for March’s UEFA Nations League A/B play-off tomorrow when the draw takes place at 11am in Nyon, Switzerland.

Following Monday night’s dramatic late victory away to Poland, which secured third place in League A Group 1, Scotland earned a play-off fixture next March against one of the nations who finished in second place in their groups in League B.

Scotland captain Andy Robertson’s sensational 92nd-minute headed winner not only secured a second-consecutive victory for the side, but also guaranteed them a play-off match against one of Austria, Greece, Turkiye and Ukraine.

The League A/B play-off fixtures will take place on Thursday 20 and Sunday 23 March 2025, with Scotland set to be at home for the second leg.

Should Scotland win the play-off they would remain in the top tier of the Nations League for the next iteration of the competition in autumn 2026.

Possible opponents

Austria

Austria secured second place in their group after losing only one match in the campaign to eventual group winners Norway, whom they beat 5-1 in Austria in the return fixture.

Scotland have played Austria three times in Steve Clarke’s tenure as Head Coach of the national team, drawing two of the games 2-2 and winning 1-0 in Vienna on route to securing second place in their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying group, thanks to a Lyndon Dykes penalty.

Greece

Narrowly pipped by England to top spot in Group B2, Greece won five of their fixtures in the Nations League, including a memorable 2-1 victory over England at Wembley.

Scotland have only played Greece on two occasions, both in qualifying for UEFA EURO 1996, both fixtures finishing 1-0 to the home side. Ally McCoist scored the only goal of the game at Hampden in 1995, a glancing header that proved pivotal in the successful qualification campaign.

Turkiye

Turkiye surrendered top spot in their Nations League group on the final day, losing 3-1 to Montenegro while Wales secured the three points they needed for top spot by winning against Iceland.

Turkiye last faced Scotland in November 2022, a friendly fixture in Diyarbakir that finished 2-1 to the home side, with John McGinn netting for Scotland.

Ukraine

After losing their opening two fixtures in Nations League Group B1, Ukraine subsequently picked up eight points in their remaining four fixtures to seal second place behind Czech Republic.

Scotland played Ukraine no less than three times in 2022, first losing 3-1 in the delayed FIFA World Cup play-off semi-final and then twice in the Nations League, winning 3-0 at Hampden before securing promotion to Group A thanks to a hard-fought 0-0 draw in Krakow, Poland.
