Scotland and Qatar will compete for the inaugural Qatar Airways Cup when the two countries meet at Easter Road Stadium, Edinburgh on Friday 5 June 2015.
Qatar Airways has been named as the Official Match Airline Partner for the match, which will take place eight days ahead of Scotland’s Euro 2016 qualifier against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin.
Qatar, having won their last two international matches against Algeria and then Slovenia, will be keen to continue their winning momentum. The FIFA World Cup 2022 hosts also won last year’s Gulf Cup of Nations.
Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, said: “We are pleased to announce that Qatar Airways has been named the Official Match Airline Partner for the Scotland versus Qatar game, reinforcing the airline’s support for this great game. As the national carrier of Qatar it is with great pride that we will be supporting our national team in this international friendly match in Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh.”
Qatar Airways UK and Ireland Country Manager, Richard Oliver, said: “Combined with our recently increased service from Edinburgh to Doha to a direct daily flight, this sponsorship further demonstrates the continued importance of the Scottish market to Qatar Airways, which offers passengers from Edinburgh more than 140 destinations via the airline’s state-of-the-art hub, Hamad International Airport in Doha.”
Gordon Strachan, Scotland national coach, said: "We are looking forward to playing our first-ever match against Qatar and I'm sure it will be a worthwhile occasion for both teams.
“Qatar are a developing football nation and their experience in the UK, training at St George's Park and playing ourselves and Northern Ireland, will be an invaluable experience for their future aspirations.
“From our point of view, it is essential that our players have some game time before the European Qualifier against Republic of Ireland, especially those in the Championship whose seasons finished as early as May 2.”
Gordon announced his team for both games at Easter Road earlier with a maiden call up for Dundee keeper Scott Bain – SQUAD IN FULL
