Scotland Women’s Under-19s failed to advance to the European Championships this summer, though Gary Doctor’s side did preserve their League A status after a third place finish in Group A5 in their UEFA Round Two qualifiers, which took place on home soil over the course of the past week.

Scotland had already impressed in reaching this stage, with wins over Sweden and Hungary in the Round One qualifiers which took place in Hungary last year.

And Doctor’s side got off to a dream start in Round Two as Scotland demolished Czechia 4-0 at Broadwood.

Full-back Fallon Connolly-Jackson was the driving force and the defender got the first of her two goals in the 19th minute to put the young Scots ahead.

Laura Berry’s clinical quickfire double in the 43rd and 45th minute then took the game away from Czechia, and Connolly-Jackson’s second goal in added time at the end of the 90 made it 4-0.

The 4-0 scoreline would prove a theme throughout the tournament and Scotland were unfortunately the wrong side of the result against strong Spain and Switzerland teams in the second and third matches.

Real Madrid forward Pau Cubarsi was the difference-maker in the second match, which took place in Kirkintilloch, as she grabbed a first half hat-trick, while Clara Serrajordi scored the fourth just after the hour mark.

Spain would advance to the finals after scoring 17 unanswered goals in their three matches, though Scotland did have the chance to grab second place as they took on Switzerland in Falkirk in the final match.

Unfortunately, the Swiss would have too much for Doctor’s side, as half-time substitute Leila Wandeler bagged a brace, with Alyssa Keller and Leela Egli also on target as Scotland were forced to settle for third place in Group A5.

Despite the back-to-back defeats, Scotland will be pleased to secure their place in League A, with the big win over Czechia – who finished bottom – proving decisive.
