The young Scots lined up in front of a hopeful crowd of 1268 at Dens as night descended on Dundee. A strong looking Scotland side, captained by Kilmarnock’s David Watson, with Barney Stewart leading the line and Lawrence and Mebude out wide. Mitchel Frame gained his first cap at the Under-21 level slotting in at left back.
Scotland’s first strike on goal came 15 minutes in as Emilio Lawrence cut inside from the left, working the space for a strike with his right foot. Jan Koutny in the Czech goal spilled, with Watson following up, but the keeper re-gathered the ball at the second attempt.
Andy Tod saw yellow 17 minutes in as he brought David Planka down as he advanced on goal. Lukas Ambros whipped the resulting free kick past the post. Moments later, a cutback from Dire Mebude was cut out as Tod lurked as the game flowed from end to end.
Czechia earned their first corner 20 minutes into the tie as a cross was deflected behind by Kyle Ure. After a flick-on it was brave defending from Andy Tod who cleared it off the line as the Czechs threatened.
Just after the half hour mark Scotland came close to taking the lead as Andy Tod pressured the Czech back line following a Barney Stewart cross, deflecting a clearance as Koutny did well to block.
The second half kicked off with a triple substitution for the hosts as Andrew Tod, Dire Mebude and Emilio Lawrence made way for Ryan Carr, Ryan One and Connor Allan as Scot Gemmill changed shape for the second half, shifting to a back three with Connor Allan joining the back-line, as Carr slotted into the midfield and One joined Stewart to lead the line.
The visitors struggled to adapt to the Scotland changes as Ryan One immediately began to stretch them, with two dangerous crosses well defended. On 52 minutes the Scots came close again as Stewart nodded agonisingly wide from a Watson free-kick.
James Wilson joined the attack on the hour mark, as Barney Stewart departed.
With 20 minutes remaining the hosts began to turn the screw, with first a cross from Mullen and then another glancing header from Connor Allan causing consternation in the visitor’s defence.
The Scots battled on as time ticked on towards full-time, pushing for a winner, but it wasn’t to be on the night, as the their stout defence was rewarded with a point.
