International Women’s Day was celebrated in style this year at Hampden Park as the Scottish FA hosted a networking event and panel talk against the backdrop of the Scottish Football Museum.

The event was held on Thursday, 7 March and was attended by an array of people connected to our game, from trailblazer Rose Reilly to current players, club staff, SWPL and SWF representatives as well as youth ambassadors.

The panel discussion was led by BBC Sport presenter Amy Irons and featured Scotland and Manchester United player Emma Watson, Glasgow City Head Coach and Scotland Women’s National Team Assistant Coach Leanne Ross, Scotland’s all-time leading goal scorer, Julie Fleeting, and Scottish FA referee Abbie Hendry.

Panellists shared their journey through the game and their unique perspectives, demonstrating the progress that’s been made in the last 50 years. This was followed by an interactive Q&A which gave the audience a unique opportunity to put their questions to some of the biggest names in the game, past and present.

Scottish FA’s Head of Girls’ Women’s Football, Shirley Martin: “This was a fantastic event which allowed the footballing community to come together to mark International Women’s Day.

“It gave young players the opportunity to come along and listen to an icon like Julie Fleeting talk about her story and the contrast it has to a current Scotland player like Emma Watson.

“Events like this are really important to celebrate the progress that’s been made and also to acknowledge and discuss how far we still have to go.”
